Our traditional costumes

The Spreewald belongs to Lusatia and thus to the settlement area of the Sorbs or Wends. Over the centuries, this Slavic minority has been able to keep its precious customs and traditions alive. The Sorbian/Wendish language is also still alive. The homeland of the Sorbs/Wends in Upper and Lower Lusatia is one of the most beautiful and diverse traditional costume regions in Germany.
The festive costumes are particularly well-known in the Spreewald. The people of the Spreewald like to call it their Spreewald costume. Typical of this valuable traditional costume – consisting of silk fabrics, lace and velvet – are the magnificent floral motifs on the neckerchiefs, the hoods (headdresses) and the skirts. The festive costumes are often worn on festive occasions, this also applies to Lehde. The floral motifs are embroidered by hand.
