In 2014, Andrea Richter had purchased an old four-sided farmstead in S\u00e4ritz, a district of Calau, and, through hard work and the help of others, had gradually made it more livable in the years that followed. Her partner, Anke Morelli, who is from Dresden, moved in with her in 2021 and was her greatest source of support.<\/p>\n

Three years ago, after a long day at work, the two of them sat on the gable wall of their barn and enjoyed the sunset on a balmy summer evening, looking out over the fields. Her property is the last one in the village on the way to Mallenchen; a path also runs past it, which was used by cyclists on the evening in question.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t we set up a caf\u00e9 for cyclists\u2026?\u201d Anke Morelli blurted out spontaneously. She had always dreamed of opening a caf\u00e9 in Dresden, but the plan just wasn’t feasible. What the two of them initially thought was a \u201ccrazy idea\u201d took on a life of its own in the days and weeks that followed; concrete plans were drawn up, and soon they began putting them into action. The two of them were a little apprehensive about the bureaucratic process required for such projects. But to their surprise, they found people willing to listen everywhere they went. Anke Morelli: \u201cOur idea was deemed sound and eligible for approval. Given the broad support, we now feel a sense of obligation to really give it our all.\u201d<\/p>\n

The barn was renovated to provide guest accommodations that meet the highest modern standards. A kitchen and a bathroom were installed. \u201cCyclists can take a shower here too, if they feel like it,\u201d says Anke Morelli.<\/p>\n

Hartmut and Elke Zwicker, a couple from G\u00f6ritz who enjoy cycling, were delighted with the location, the atmosphere, and the food and drink menu. They’ve been here several times; the first time was more or less by chance. Hartmut Zwicker: \u201cWe were on our way to Mallenchen and didn\u2019t even notice the building on the way there. It wasn\u2019t until we were on our way back that we spotted the sign \u2018Fahrradcaf\u00e9 zum Feldblick\u2019 on the gable wall\u2014and decided to stop in on a whim. We loved the cozy atmosphere; the two of them welcomed us warmly and treated us like old friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guestbook is full of similar comments; the atmosphere, in particular, is what people really appreciate.<\/p>\n

The caf\u00e9 is open Wednesday through Sunday starting at 1 p.m. Andrea Richter: \u201cWe don\u2019t have set closing times. When the weather\u2019s right, the sun has set below the horizon, and the last guest has hopped on their bike, we treat ourselves to a little rest. Sometimes we\u2019ll sit by the gable wall\u2014where our idea was born in 2023\u2014and talk about the day and how we\u2019ve both found what makes us happy!\u201d<\/p>\n
