These admonishing voices are not unjustified – but they are being heard! For example from Sandy Kalz. She was born in 1982, is young and motivated enough to acquire extensive knowledge and skills, ask around among her elders and gather everything together – which proves to be difficult, however: much has only been passed down orally over generations, some things are a family peculiarity. Using old traditional costumes that Sandy Kalz has at home, she was able to familiarize herself with the details and thus acquire skills in sewing traditional costumes.

The Raddusch children’s and youth costume dance group founded by Sandy Kalz is an opportunity for her not only to teach traditional dances, but also to pass on the correct way to wear the costume so that the pride of origin and tradition grows among the village youth. Sandy Kalz: “For me, the focus is on bringing together girls from different age groups, from 6 to 16 years old, who would otherwise hardly have come together. They learn from me and from each other, and I like to see myself as a facilitator.” As the mother of two grown-up daughters, who wear the traditional costume to village events as a matter of course, she knows the sensitivities of children and young people. She is supported in her dance training by Anja Kienz from Raddusch.

Dances can be practiced, but the commitment to tradition must grow. Not all parents have the same roots, some have moved in but are still involved. For Sandy Kalz, preserving tradition is also about the details, especially those that make up the Raddusch costume. “For me, it’s the lace at the hem of the skirt, which is only worn in Raddusch. For me, it’s also the special shape of the hood and especially the beaded belt,” says Sandy Kalz. To equip her children’s dance group with these belts, she simply makes them herself on long evenings! “They are ‘growing’ belts that children can wear for a long time to come. I make the basic shape, consisting of three layers and the buckle. I meet with the mothers every week and together we embroider the belts with beads, just like it used to be,” she adds.

The history of this special feature, the wearing of a belt instead of a ribbon, is somewhat obscure and goes back well over 150 years. Local historian Manfred Kliche suspects that the people of Raddusch wanted to express their prosperity and their orientation towards the modern world: “The railroad connection in 1866 gave Raddusch access to the Berlin market, trade flourished and with it the prosperity, at least of parts of the village population, which they wanted to show off.” The ambition among the women to make and own the most beautiful pearl belt was correspondingly great. The belt may have been inspired by the bourgeois fashion of the time, as worn by city dwellers.

Thanks to Sandy Kalz’s initiative, a good 150 years later women from Raddush are once again sitting together and embroidering their daughters’ belts – and probably one or two of their own. The traditional events with ever-increasing numbers of participants, such as carnival, maypole erection and the harbor festival, have created a demand for belts. Sandy’s dance group is now complete!

Peter Becker, 24.05.26

Typical Raddusch: lace border The belt that grows with you Sandy Kalz Raddusch children’s and youth dance group at the 2026 harbor festival Wheel shower 1920 Occasionally, voices can be heard worrying about the future of traditional dress: who will tailor the traditional costumes in the future, who knows how to dress properly?
