However, it will finally provide separation from road traffic and the newly planted 47 trees will provide some shade. The footpath and cycle path leads past the Slavic castle and closes the gap to the Koßwig cycle network and thus to the Lusatian Lakeland. At four steles, which also provide seating, hikers can find out about regional topics such as post-mining landscapes, the Sorbs/Wends in Raddusch and archaeology. Information is provided about the formation of the neighboring lakes, Lake Kahnsdorf and Lake Bischdorf, and about the previous open-cast mines. In this context, the visitor also learns about the archaeological finds from the Germanic and Slavic settlement periods made in the course of the foreland explorations.

The town of Vetschau as the client and representatives of the Drebkau-based construction company Koalick inaugurated the path. It forms the connection from the L49 via the former Boblitz bathing lake to Lübbenau and is in need of major repair along about one kilometer due to broken roots. “We expect the construction work to take around four weeks. Root barriers will have to be installed on both sides to prevent roots from lifting the asphalt again,” said Marko Palme.

Vetschau’s mayor Chris Mielchen also had some good news to share. “The plans are also in place for the cycle path between Raddusch and Stradow, so that this path, which many citizens want, could be in place by 2029 at the latest,” he said.

Shortly after the opening, the first official user of the trail was encountered in the pouring rain: Thomas Schulze from Vetschau sees the path as an enrichment to his training route, as he wants to prepare for a half marathon.

Shortly after the ribbon was cut, the first official trail user, Thomas Schulze, jogged along the new path.

Despite all the joy about the successful and solidly built path, there is still a sour aftertaste: it was actually supposed to be the “Slavic Castle Trail” and also called that, but in the year the path was created, the castle had to be closed due to insolvency. Vetschau’s mayor Chris Mielchen: “We are working consistently on reopening the castle, on any kind of use, but that will take some time!” Until then, the path will probably serve as a “gap-filling path” before it can bear its originally intended name.

Peter Becker, 07.05.26

Back in 2013, the Raddusch tourism association applied to the town of Vetschau for the construction of a footpath and cycle path to the Slavic castle.
